Head and Neck Cancer Screening

Most people don't give much thought to head and neck cancer - but they should. It is the 6th most common form of cancer in the United States with 40,000 cases diagnosed annually.

Head and neck cancer occurs in the head or neck region, including:

  • Nasal cavity
  • Sinuses
  • Lips
  • Mouth
  • Salivary glands
  • Throat or larynx (voice box)

Tobacco and alcohol use are the leading causes and a combination of the two places individuals at greater risk for developing oral cancer than those who use them alone.

The risk associated with tobacco is not limited to cigarettes. All forms of tobacco put you at risk, including cigarettes, cigars, pipes, chewing tobacco and snuff.

Signs of oral, head and neck cancer include a mouth sore that doesn't heal, constant mouth pain, lumps or white or red patches in the mouth, pain around the teeth, changes in your voice, and a lump in the neck.

Environmental issues also put people at risk. Exposure to asbestos, wood dust, paint fumes, and certain chemicals may increase risk as does excessive sun exposure and long-term acid reflux.

Research has shown that many people have little awareness of the causes, signs or symptoms of head and neck cancer and how it is diagnosed. Dr. Chapman stresses that people at risk for oral cancers should receive regular health and dental screenings. A routine exam for head and neck cancer is a simple, quick procedure in which the doctor looks in the nose, mouth and throat for abnormalities, and feels for lumps in the neck. People who use alcohol or tobacco should be screened at least once a year.

Hearing Services

We provide diagnostic hearing evaluations to determine if a person has hearing loss and what part of the ear may be causing the problem. There are many ways to assess hearing in the adult population. Depending on a patient's symptoms and their ability to participate in the evaluation process, one or many different tests may be necessary.

We take the time to review test results with patients in understandable terms and are available to answer any questions. Our audiologist works closely with Dr. Brandon Chapman and will let patients know if they need to see a physician for evaluation or treatment. If hearing aids are recommended, we dispense all styles and technology levels of digital hearing aids.

Pediatric Audiology

While hearing can be tested at any age, testing a child's hearing can be very different from testing an adult. Months before a child can reliably respond to sound, we can use objective tests to estimate hearing.

As the child develops the ability to respond consistently to sound, we are able to use enjoyable activities to determine the softest sounds a child can hear. If amplification is required, we are able to work with both the child and the family to ensure that the child has every opportunity to maximize his or her hearing potential.
